Online lecture "Citizen science: an untapped opportunity for Lithuanian researchers?"

The event "iNaturalist: kaip pažįstant gamtą prisidėti prie mokslinių atradimų?" (iNaturalist: how to contribute to scientific discoveries by getting to know nature?), held on 18 April to mark Citizen Science Month, attracted a large number of participants. Using the "iNaturalist" app, the participants tried out the citizen science method in practice and discovered more than 50 different biological species living right next to the VU Library MKIC! Buoyed by the success of the event, we invite you to continue getting to know citizen science, this time looking at the phenomenon of citizen science from a theoretical perspective, and to take part in the online lecture "Piliečių mokslas - neišnaudota galimybė Lietuvos mokslininkams?" (Citizen science: an untapped opportunity for Lithuanian researchers?), which will take place on 30 April at 10:00. The event will be led by Dr Monika Mačiulienė, head of the Lithuanian Citizen Science Association. For a number of years Monika has been actively engaged in popularising and disseminating citizen science ideas not only in Lithuania but also beyond its borders. We are glad of the opportunity to present to the community interested in citizen science the relevant citizen science trends that remain on the periphery of research in Lithuania.
The citizen science method is a research method applicable in all fields of science, so it is no surprise that citizen science projects are astonishing in their diversity, which ranges from studies of local ecosystems to explorations of the vastness of space. During the event you will become acquainted with this diversity, the theoretical foundations of the citizen science method, the principles underlying it and good practices. You will also learn what challenges and problems citizen science faces as it makes its way into the ranks not only of professional scientists but also of amateur scientists (citizens). Together we will look for ways to promote the spread of citizen science ideas in Lithuania, so that the academic community and citizens themselves discover citizen science and make use of the opportunities it offers in addressing the pressing problems of today.
Date and time of the event: 30 April 2024, 10:00. The event will take place online.
