Invitation: online lecture by Prof. Alan Irwin, "The Many Faces of Citizen Science"

22 April 2026 | 15:00-16:30 | Online via Microsoft Teams

Vilnius University Library invites you to the online lecture "Piliečių mokslo įvairovė" (The Many Faces of Citizen Science), to be given by one of the world's most prominent researchers in this field, Prof. Alan Irwin.

About the speaker

Prof. Alan Irwin is widely recognised as the originator of the concept of citizen science. It was his 1995 book Citizen Science that established this term in academic and public discourse. Prof. Irwin currently works at the Centre for Studies in Research and Research Policy at Aarhus University (Denmark) and at the Department of Organization at Copenhagen Business School. He also chaired the European Commission's Mutual Learning Exercise "Citizen Science Initiatives: Policy and Practice" and heads the "Science in Society" committee of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters.

Why take part?

Citizen science today covers far more than a single model or approach. From community-initiated environmental monitoring projects to structured data collection platforms, from participation in policymaking to the democratisation of science, the forms and aims of citizen science are constantly expanding. In his lecture, Prof. Irwin will invite us to look at this diversity and to reflect on what it means for the relationship between science and society in the future.
